Are Self-Defense Classes Worth It?

Why Self-Defense Classes?

Self-defense classes have become increasingly popular in recent years, and for a good reason. Taking a self-defense class can provide numerous benefits, including improved physical fitness, increased confidence, and practical skills to protect oneself from harm. Self-defense classes can increase your sense of personal safety when you are out on the streets at night or in an unfamiliar situation, but they can also give you a way to meet other people and connect with those in the wider community who have a shared interest.

Stay Safe

The first and most apparent reason why you should take a self-defense class is to learn how to stay safe in dangerous situations. Self-defense classes will teach you practical techniques for defending yourself against physical attacks, including strikes, kicks, throws, and joint locks. You’ll find these techniques to be useful in a variety of situations, such as walking alone at night, traveling to unfamiliar places, or dealing with potentially violent individuals – having these skills can even encourage you to go places or do things you might not otherwise – not in a reckless sense, of course, but if you are anxious about going places alone or traveling to a foreign country, taking a self-defense class could help you alleviate some of that anxiety.

Increase Awareness of Personal Safety

Self-defense classes help preserve your personal safety by teaching you how to sense and avoid dangerous situations altogether. They teach situational awareness and how to recognize potentially risky situations before they escalate into violence. This can include techniques such as maintaining eye contact, using assertive body language, and de-escalating confrontations before they turn violent. By learning how to recognize and avoid dangerous situations, you can reduce your risk of becoming a victim of violence.

Fitness Training

In addition to practical skills for self-defense, taking a self-defense class can also provide significant physical fitness benefits. Many self-defense classes incorporate aerobic exercise, fitness training, and flexibility exercises. You’ll burn calories, build strength, and improve your overall fitness level while learning these essential self-defense skills. This combination of fitness and self-defense can be an effective way to stay healthy while gaining valuable skills to protect yourself.

Boost Self-Confidence with Defense Moves

Another significant benefit of taking a self-defense class is a boost in self-confidence. As was mentioned earlier, learning defense moves can be empowering, and it may encourage you to do or try things you wouldn’t have otherwise. Self-defense classes often include simulated scenarios where participants can practice their skills in a safe and controlled environment. These scenarios can help you feel more confident in your ability to defend yourself, which can carry over into other areas of your life.

Find a Personal Safety Community

Self-defense classes can also provide a sense of community and support. A self-defense class allows you to meet and connect with others who share similar interests and concerns. This sense of community can be especially beneficial for individuals who may feel vulnerable or isolated, such as survivors of trauma or individuals from marginalized communities. Being part of a supportive personal safety community may help you feel more empowered and less alone, whether or not you are in those categories.

Fun and Rewarding Fitness Training Experience

Finally, taking a self-defense class can be a fun and rewarding experience. Many classes are taught in a non-competitive and supportive environment where you can learn at your own pace and without judgment. Learning self-defense can be an exciting and engaging process, and it can be a fun way to challenge yourself physically and mentally.

Self-Defense Classes at Florida Kickboxing Academy

As you can see, there are numerous reasons why you should take a self-defense class, such as learning how to protect yourself, learning practical skills to avoid and respond to dangerous situations, improving physical fitness, boosting self-confidence, and providing a sense of community and support. You may find that taking a self-defense class is a fun and rewarding experience that benefits you in many ways. Are You Allowed to Use Martial Arts in Self-Defense?

Using Martial Arts in Self-Defense

Martial arts have been practiced for centuries for various reasons, such as exercise, mental discipline, sport, and self-defense. Self-defense is one of the primary reasons people learn martial arts, but the question of whether it is legal to use martial arts in self-defense arises. Modern martial arts are descended from hand-to-hand combat styles (and other types of fighting) across cultures and millennia used to fend off attacks and inflict bodily harm or death. Everyone, including an experienced martial artist, has a right to defend him/herself in the event of an attack. Here’s what you need to know about protecting yourself in a fight legally as an experienced martial arts practitioner.

Registering Your Martial Arts Skills

First of all, Guam is the only U.S. territory where martial arts experts are required to register:

“Any person who is an expert in the art of karate or judo, or any similar physical art in which the hands and feet are used as deadly weapons, is required to register with the Department of Revenue and Taxation.”

Guam Ann. Code Title 10 Ch. 62 § 62100

Refusing to register yourself as a trained martial artist in Guam is against the law. Once registered, if you’re convicted of using martial arts to assault someone, you are automatically guilty of aggravated assault.

When Hand-to-Hand Combat for Martial Arts is Legal Self-Defense

In the United States (and in many other countries), self-defense is considered a legal defense if one uses force to protect oneself from an imminent threat of bodily harm or death. However, the law requires that the use of force must be proportional to the threat posed. You are also legally allowed to defend others with your martial arts, provided, again, that your response is proportional. This means that the level of force used in self-defense should not exceed what is reasonably necessary to repel the attack. As a martial artist, you must be fully aware of the consequences of intentionally or unintentionally misusing your skills. Even though you may be capable of grievously injuring or killing an attacker, the law does not allow you to do so if the use of force is deemed excessive. Using excessive force can result in assault and battery charges.

Each case is reviewed individually and subjectively as to whether the threat to your safety incurring your use of martial arts was warranted – sometimes the threat is so obvious as to be unquestionably warranted, such as assault with a deadly weapon.

As a martial artist, you want to first make every attempt to neutralize a threat without resorting to using your martial arts skills. You can only safely use your martial arts skills to repel the attacker once every other method of defusing the threat has failed (leaving the scene may be an option in some cases). Only use the amount of force necessary to neutralize the threat without causing any further injury.

Legal Consequences for Using Martial Arts Wrongfully in Self-Defense

If you use your martial arts skills against a threat that is non-imminent or nonproportional to the amount of force you used, you could be held criminally liable for excessive and disproportionate use of force, and you may be arrested and charged with criminal assault.

Misdemeanor assault can result in:

  • A probationary sentence
  • A fine of several hundred dollars
  • Short-term incarceration

Felony assault charges can result in:

  • A fine of several thousand dollars and
  • Long-term incarceration
  • Life imprisonment

Act Responsibly as a Martial Artist in Hand-to-Hand Combat

If you can safely walk away from a confrontation, that’s always the best course of action. If a physical altercation with someone is unavoidable:

  • Warn the attacker that you intend to fight back.
  • Do not strike until it is absolutely necessary.
  • Use appropriate force for the attacker and for the attack itself.
  • Plan how you would respond to an attack before you have to do it in real time.
  • Each state has different laws governing self-defense. If you’re an experienced martial artist, it’s your responsibility to know the laws governing whatever state you’re in.

How Long Does It Take to Learn Kickboxing?

Kickboxing: One of the Best Fitness Classes for a Great Workout

Kickboxing is a martial art involving punching, kicking, knee strikes, and various techniques from boxing, karate, and other martial arts. Not only is it a great workout, but it’s also a sufficient form of self-defense, as well as a competitive sport. If you’re interested in kickboxing school, you may be wondering how long it will take to become proficient. However, the answer to this question is not straightforward, as there are many factors that can influence the time it will take you to learn kickboxing.

Honing Natural Abilities in a Kickboxing School

First and foremost, the amount of time it takes to learn kickboxing will depend on your natural abilities and physical attributes. You may be naturally coordinated and have good reflexes, making it easier for you to quickly pick up on the techniques and movements of kickboxing. If you tend to struggle with balance or coordination, it will take you longer to master the martial art, but that doesn’t mean you should not try kickboxing school! Many people are not naturally good at kickboxing, but with practice and patience, they can become very skilled martial artists.

Level of Commitment/Frequency of Fitness Classes

Another important factor that can influence how long it takes to learn kickboxing is your level of commitment. To become proficient in kickboxing, you have to put in the time and effort required to learn the techniques and build up your strength and endurance. This involves not only attending regular classes at kickboxing school but practicing on your own as well. Whether or not you are naturally adept at kickboxing, you have to put in the time and effort perfecting your short form to become truly skilled at it.

The frequency of training is also a significant factor in how long it takes to learn kickboxing. If you only attend class once a week, you’ll progress more slowly than someone who trains multiple times a week. Consistency is key when it comes to building muscle memory, improving coordination, and developing overall fitness. If you can commit to more frequent training sessions, you are likely to see faster progress.

Fitness Goals and a Great Workout

Your individual fitness goals are another crucial factor that can influence how long it takes to learn kickboxing. If you’re interested in learning basic techniques for self-defense or fitness purposes, you may be able to achieve that fairly quickly. However, if you want to compete in kickboxing tournaments or earn a black belt in the sport, that will take much longer, as you’ll need to learn advanced techniques and develop a deeper understanding of the sport, which can take several years of consistent training.

Quality of Instruction at Your Kickboxing School

The quality of instruction and the training environment are also important factors to consider when it comes to learning kickboxing. High-quality instruction from experienced and knowledgeable coaches can help individuals progress more quickly and safely. Additionally, a positive and supportive training environment can help individuals stay motivated and engaged in their training, which can lead to faster progress. However, regardless of the time it takes to learn kickboxing, the benefits of the sport, including improved fitness, self-defense skills, and increased confidence, make it a worthwhile pursuit for anyone interested in martial arts. When Is a Good Age to Learn Kickboxing?

The Right Time to Start Kickboxing: Is Age Just a Number?

Exploring the benefits of learning kickboxing at different stages of life and how to find the best age for you to begin training.

Kickboxing is a popular form of exercise and self-defense that has been gaining popularity in recent years. Not only does it provide a full-body workout, but it also helps to improve cardiovascular health, build strength and conditioning, and develop discipline and focus. But when is the best age to start learning kickboxing?

There is no single answer to this question, as the benefits of kickboxing can be enjoyed at any age. However, starting at different stages of life can bring different considerations, and finding the right kickboxing class is essential for getting the most out of your training. In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of kickboxing at different ages and how to find the best kickboxing class for you. We will also examine how kickboxing classes can improve heart rate and the importance of finding a short form that works for you. With the help of a qualified instructor at the right kickboxing school like Florida Kickboxing Academy, you can start your journey toward fitness, self-defense, and personal growth.

Bump Up Your Heart Rate with the Physical Power of Kickboxing

Kickboxing is a full-body workout that provides a wide range of physical benefits. One of the most notable is the improvement in cardiovascular health. Kickboxing classes involve a lot of high-intensity, cardio-based exercises that help to get your heart rate up and improve cardiovascular fitness. Kickboxing can help lower heart disease risk, improve lung function, and increase overall endurance.

In addition to cardiovascular health, kickboxing is a great way to build strength and conditioning. The combination of kicking, punching, and footwork involved in kickboxing helps work multiple muscle groups simultaneously. This can help to build lean muscle mass, increase muscle endurance, and improve overall fitness.

Discover the Perfect Kickboxing School for You

When it comes to learning kickboxing, finding the right school and class is crucial. The first thing to look for is a reputable kickboxing school with qualified instructors. Another factor to consider is the class format. Some schools may focus on short form, which is more suitable for beginners, while others may offer longer form classes that are more challenging. Finding a class format that works for you and your goals is important.

Age is Just a Number: Kickboxing Classes for All Stages of Life

Kickboxing classes can benefit people of all ages, but there are some points to consider when it comes to different age groups. For children, kickboxing classes can be a great way to develop discipline and focus. Finding a school that offers classes specifically for children, with instructors who have experience working with young students, is essential.

For younger children, you know your child best. Consider the amount of physical and mental development they have before starting any martial arts training. Generally, experts recommend that children wait until they are at least 8 years old before beginning kickboxing. This allows them to first develop their motor skills, balance, coordination, and basic self-defense techniques before moving on to more advanced training. It’s also important to keep in mind that kickboxing can be dangerous and that a qualified instructor must supervise children at all times. For teenagers, discipline and focus are skills that can be built upon in kickboxing classes, as well as fostering self-confidence and self-esteem.

Kickboxing offers many of the same benefits as other martial arts for older adults. It’s a great way to stay in shape and improve coordination, balance, and flexibility. It can also provide a social outlet for those looking for new activities or ways to get out of the house. Older adults should also ensure they are physically able to handle the activity, as kickboxing involves some risk of injury.

Kickboxing Classes Can Help You Achieve Your Goals

Kickboxing is an excellent form of exercise and self-defense that can be enjoyed at any age. Finding the right school and class for you is the key to getting the most out of your kickboxing training. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced kickboxer, a qualified instructor can help you to achieve your goals and improve your overall fitness, self-defense, and personal growth. Consider your age and the class format when choosing the right kickboxing school. You can start your journey toward wellness, fitness, self-defense, and personal growth with the right class.

From Corn Fields to the Cage: A Spotlight on Coach Jason Somchay

Just as important as tradition is to martial arts, so are those who take on the responsibility of teaching them. That’s why Florida Kickboxing Academy is so proud to have some of the best trainers in the world partnering with us. One of those trainers is Jason Somchay. Born and raised in Nebraska, we are so fortunate that he made his way to Florida to share his love of the self-defense system known as Muay Thai.

“Martial Arts is Everything To Me”

Jason was raised by his grandparents who came to the Midwest as refugees of the Vietnam War. Martial arts and self-discipline were a daily part of Jason’s upbringing. He grew up in his Tecumseh, Nebraska home kicking rice bags and learning (and taking!) teeps from both his grandmother and his grandfather. One of his fondest memories is of watching Muay Thai on satellite television with his grandmother. Muay Thai is prominent in Southeast Asia and his Laotian grandparents made sure to continue the tradition with Jason.

His Laotian blood aided him in quickly picking up whatever sports and fitness training he tried. He played American football and basketball and competed in wrestling. With an affinity for the spotlight, he was also involved in the performing arts. He could be seen singing in the choir and even breakdancing in his local community.

Family, Florida, and Fitness Training

Times of adversity, encouragement from athletic coaches, and opportunities to compete brought Jason out of his shell and he took a leap of faith. In 2005, he made the move to South Florida, following his uncle. His uncle had just become an MMA fighter and was acting on several shows based in Florida. He took the opportunity to corner his uncle’s MMA fights and it wasn’t long before the cage lights took Jason in.

In 2008, Jason had his first MMA fight. He knocked his opponent out in 17 seconds. It was in that moment that Jason knew that there was a door of opportunity opening for him in the world of Muay Thai and martial arts. He continued fighting in Muay Thai and MMA and in 2012 he went professional. Still with a heart for performing, showing his skills in the ring brought both joy and fulfillment into Jason’s life.

Passing on the Tradition of Self-Discipline

After competing in 40+ fights over 15+ years, Jason made the decision to share his knowledge with others and began coaching Muay Thai. He is passionately passing along his experience to his students while still enjoying a bit of the cage light at the same time. He aspires to be an inspiration to all he comes in contact with and wants to continuously develop more and more champion fighters. He works with students of all skill levels and experience and strives to make each of his students into the best version of themselves.

“Every man’s heart one day beats its final beat, his lungs take their final breath, and if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the bodies of others, then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized by storytellers, by the loyalty and memory of those who honor him.”

The Origins of Muay Thai Kickboxing

From Muay Thai History, to Learning Traditional Values and Advancing into Stand-up Striking, Florida Kickboxing Academy Provides Students with a Comprehensive Muay Thai Training Experience

What Is Muay Thai?

What is Muay Thai? Muay Thai boxing is known as “the art of the eight limbs.” These eight limbs are your two hands, two fists, two knees, and two feet – your weapons in the ring. It is a form of close-combat fighting developed centuries ago that uses the entire body as a weapon. (Ready to join the fight with Muay Thai classes at Florida Kickboxing Academy? Register here.)

Muay Thai History

Muay Thai’s history begins centuries ago in Thailand, and today it is the country’s national sport. Muay Thai’s definitive origins are debated by modern scholars because much of Muay Thai history was lost when the Burmese army ransacked the Siamese capital, Ayudhaya, in the 14th century.

In 695 C.E., the Siamese created their very first army in the northern city of Sukhothai in order to defend themselves from the attacks of neighboring tribes and kingdoms. Soldiers were taught how to use their entire bodies as a weapon. This Muay Thai training evolved from Krabi Krabong, literally translated as “long and short weapons,” the previous weapons tactics of the Thai army.

To practice, different companies within the Siamese army went up against each other in unarmed combat (Muay Boran) with few rules, no weight divisions, and no time limits. The rudimentary elements slowly turned into precise techniques – such as stand-up striking – through the experiences of training, military exercises, combat, and loss of life. The goal of each strike and movement is to deliver a debilitating blow that enables the fighter to quickly overcome his opponent while never himself becoming vulnerable. Veteran soldiers taught novices offensive and defensive tactics, proper posture and positioning, and methods for enhancing awareness, and the lessons continued on throughout the generations of Thai fighters.

Evolution of Muay Thai Training

Learning the traditional values that Muay Thai training instilled in young men became a staple of early Siamese culture. The first Muay Thai training camps sprung up all over the country in order to prepare citizens for war. Some Buddhist monks even taught Muay Thai at Buddhist temples. Muay Thai eventually became a martial art associated with royalty and the aristocracy as well. The two sons of King Phokhun Sri In Tharatit, the first King of Sukhothai, were sent to learn Muay Thai, with the idea that good warriors made brave leaders and that it would prepare them as future rulers.

The “Golden Age of Muay Thai” came in the 1880s. King Rama V enthusiastically promoted Muay Thai training as a way to stay physically fit and learn traditional values. He promoted tournaments and “Muay Luang,” or royally-appointed boxing centers, throughout the kingdom. It served as a way for him to scout men who would make good bodyguards or royal military officers. Many times the top fighters at these royal centers would receive personal invitations from the King to fight at tournaments, festivals, and important international events. And when The Thai Department of Education was created in 1887, Muay Thai became part of the Military Cadet teachers’ school curriculum.

Muay Thai Comes to Europe and Beyond

Muay Thai was introduced to Europe and the rest of the world during World War I. Thai commanders would organize Muay Thai bouts for their troops stationed in France to boost morale, and French soldiers would try to compete against the Thai fighters. The first permanent Thai boxing stadium was built at the Suan Khoolab School after the war. It was during the time after the war that time limits, boxing gloves, and a uniform set of rules were introduced to Muay Thai.
The oldest and largest Muay Thai organization in the world, The World Thai Boxing Association (WTBA), was founded in 1968 by Ajarn Surachai “Chai” Sirisute. (Ajarn is Thai for head instructor.) Ajarn Chai came to the United States intending to spread the art of Muay Thai throughout the world. He was the first-ever Thai boxing instructor to teach Americans Muay Thai. But it didn’t stop with him. His training brought more and more teachers and masters in the United States. Schools and federations began popping up all over the country, carrying the tradition with them. Today, Muay Thai is a very popular martial art all over the United States, and Florida Kickboxing Academy is pleased to list Muay Thai on its roster of excellent classes.

Today’s Muay Thai Training: From Ancient Tradition to Modern Martial Artistry

Muay Thai has evolved over the years, but what makes it so unique as a martial art is its rich history and tradition. With the proper instruction, the invaluable skills of Muay Thai fighting can be passed down as new trained fighters learn. How Muay Thai Kickboxing Sharpens the Mind and Body

Discover the Benefits Available to All Skill Levels at Our West Palm Beach Muay Thai Gym

Muay Thai kickboxing is known as the art of the eight limbs: two hands + two fists + two knees + two feet.

Muay Thai began as a type of close combat fighting in Thailand, and it was so effective that many considered it more deadly than certain weapons. Muay Thai training has increased in popularity in the last decade or so. Not only are more Muay Thai gyms springing up in the U.S., but more foreign nationals are also joining Muay Thai schools in Thailand in order to practice this ancient martial art. Read on to learn more about the merits of Muay Thai kickboxing.

Muay Thai Training Delivers a Full Body Workout – Both Mentally and Physically

When you choose to do Muay Thai training, you will get a comprehensive mind-body workout. This martial art is great for weight loss and body sculpting. The running, jumping rope, kickboxing, and shadowboxing used in Muay Thai provide both aerobic and anaerobic workouts. This is why Muay Thai is a great way to strengthen your muscles, including your core, and improve flexibility. Strengthening these muscle groups now will protect you when you are older; improved coordination and strength will decrease your likelihood of a bad fall. Muay Thai will also increase your stamina and improve your cardiovascular health, as the rigorous training for this martial art requires a lot of energy and dedication.

Committing to training at a Muay Thai gym will give you accountability for sticking to your workout routine and making progress on your goals. The only person you have to compare yourself to is you. So, as you learn new skills and techniques and see yourself making progress in your fitness goals, you will gain more confidence in this discipline – something that can benefit you outside of our gym. In Muay Thai, mentality is key. Not unlike chess, Muay Thai is exercise for the brain, not just the body. Practicers of Muay Thai see many of the same benefits as those who practice meditation. For example, Muay Thai training can improve your concentration, strategic thinking, and mindfulness skills

Muay Thai Kickboxing Helps Relieve Stress and Enhance Personal Safety

The benefits of exercise and the release of endorphins that accompany it are well-documented. What better way to dispel any negative thoughts and feelings in a healthy, productive way than punching an actual punching bag? A good Muay Thai workout is an excellent way to decompress, let go of unproductive feelings, and release pent-up energy.

Additionally, Muay Thai training is an excellent way to develop valuable self-defense tactics that can help ensure your safety in the real world. Muay Thai training is strike-based, but you can also use the techniques to pin down an opponent should you need to. It usually only takes about six months of training to learn the required skills to defend oneself with Muay Thai kickboxing. Florida Kickboxing Academy offers authentic training carefully supervised by our expert instructors – some of which are professional fighters themselves.

Whether you are just beginning your Muay Thai training, or are a seasoned competitor, our instructors’ use of modern training methods to help you perfect proven techniques equips you to achieve results regardless of skill level.

Benefits of Kickboxing Classes for Kids

How a Class at Florida Kickboxing Academy Equips Children for a Healthier Life

If you’re a parent, you may be hesitant about sending your child to a kickboxing academy. The phrase may conjure up images of children wrestling each other to the ground and breaking boards with their bare fists. Not only are kids safe under the tutelage of skilled, knowledgeable instructors, but kickboxing classes deliver a variety of benefits for children of various ages – as you’ll discover below.

Finding “Family” in a Kickboxing Class

The goal at Florida Kickboxing Academy is to improve the lives of all of our members, what we refer to as our “family.” This means every child is trained at a pace that works for them. We do this by improving the fitness, self-confidence, and physical abilities and encouraging participation and camaraderie in the FKA family – areas that can benefit your child both now and later as they progress through life.

Our state of the art training center at FKA houses only the highest quality equipment, and we employ the best teachers in the community. Importantly, our teachers are parents themselves. As experienced instructors of children, your child will never be the “test case.” We believe that offering authentic training through our kickboxing classes provides the best physical and physiological benefits for beginners, including children as young as [INSERT STARTING AGE].

Kickboxing Classes Generate Better Coordination, Motor Skills, and Physical Exercise

Doing martial arts movements gives children a chance to practice motor skills and better their coordination. Whether they are struggling with their motor skills or not, the exercises practiced in kickboxing class, such as punching, kicking, and jumping will help your child perfect the coordination and balance necessary to develop properly.

Developing quick reaction times to specific cues will also help your child improve their gross motor skills as it requires swift changes in stance and direction, improving balance. Not to mention, kids need a safe space to discharge their “after-school restraint collapse.” They’ve most likely been sitting at a desk all day, consistently being asked to sit still and keep quiet. Kids need a place to discharge all of the energy they’ve built up over the course of their school day, and an intensive physical workout in a kickboxing class is a healthy, constructive way to let off steam, work up a good sweat, and burn some calories. After all, finding physical exercise that your child enjoys will not only keep them healthy as kids but set them up for success later in life, as they now have a form of exercise they enjoy that they can come back to as adults to keep themselves fit and healthy.

Learning Respect for Others in a Kickboxing Class

Respect for others is one of the core values in martial arts classes across the board. Whether it’s for fellow classmates, teachers, or parents, children are encouraged to respect everyone and treat others well no matter who they are. In kickboxing, children must make eye contact with their teacher and their class partners, listen closely when others talk, and bow to opponents before engaging with them. Ideally, children will transfer the respect they learn in their kickboxing classes to everyday interactions with others. Martial arts studios are always accepting environments where people can come as they are. Children are encouraged to support and cheer for one another.
